MENTAL HEALTH

Mental Health vs. Mental Illness: Understanding the Difference

At Higher Expectations Community Church, we believe your mental and emotional health matter deeply. Just like physical health, mental health affects every part of life—how you think, feel, relate to others, and handle challenges.

Mental health is your overall emotional and psychological well-being. When you're mentally healthy, you can manage stress, build relationships, and enjoy life—even during hard times.

Mental illness
involves patterns of thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that significantly impact daily functioning. Conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder require understanding, treatment, and support.

Everyone has emotional ups and downs but when challenges persist or interfere with daily life, it’s time to seek help.

Healing is Possible

No one is immune to mental health struggles. Life changes, personal trauma, or biological factors can affect anyone. But healing is possible through faith, professional care, and a supportive community.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18

God sees your pain and walks with you. You're not alone.

What Can Cause Mental Health Challenges?

Mental health issues can come from many sources:

- Trauma or loss (death, divorce, abuse)

- Life transitions (illness, job loss, financial stress)

- Environmental stress (violence, poverty, discrimination)

- Biological and genetic influences (family history, brain chemistry)
