40 days of prayer & fasting

"It Happens After Prayer"

January 5, 2026 – February 13, 2026

These 40 days are an invitation into deeper intimacy with God and greater dependence on His presence and power. Prayer shapes us, strengthens us, humbles us, corrects us, and builds us. As a church, we are setting aside this season expecting God to speak, to move, and to reveal His will like never before. Some breakthroughs only happen after prayer. Some healing only happens after prayer. Some clarity only comes after prayer. Walk slowly with God in these pages. Let Him meet you, shape you, and renew you. Grab a journal or notebook to journal daily as you journey these 40 days. Writing down what God says will help you see His faithfulness from day to day.

A Pastoral Word on Fasting During These 40 Days

As we begin this journey, remember that fasting is a personal and prayerful decision. Each of us is at a different place in our spiritual growth, and fasting should never become an opportunity for comparison or competition.Instead, we lean on the encouragement of Hebrews 10:24–25 which reminds us to stir up one another to love and good works, encouraging one another as we seek the Lord together.

Medical & Health Note

If you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic, taking medication, or managing health conditions of any kind, we strongly suggest consulting your primary care physician before participating in any food-related fasting. Your health is stewardship entrusted to you by God. If you cannot fast at this time, know that God honors your sincere heart you can fully participate through prayer, journaling, Scripture meditation, and daily quiet time with the Lord. Your devotion is what matters most, not the method.

Sanctuary Open for Prayer

During these 40 days, the Sanctuary will be open for prayer one hour before each service. Please enter quietly so as not to distract others who are seeking the Lord in silence and reflection.

Biblical Understanding of Fasting

Fasting means giving up food or sweet pleasures for a time so we can surrender more fully to God’s will, hear His voice more clearly, obey His leading, repent where needed, and rejoice as He moves in our lives. The purpose of fasting is not deprivation but devotion positioning our hearts to receive from God.

Ways to Fast During These 40 Days

The Daniel Fast
This removes meat, dairy, bread, sugar, processed foods, fried foods, caffeine, and alcohol. You enjoy fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and water.

One Meal A Day Fast (HEC Suggested Fast)
Skip one meal each day and dedicate that time to prayer, reading Scripture, journaling, worship, or quiet reflection. Allow physical hunger to awaken deeper spiritual dependence. This is the recommended fast for most of our congregation because it is both meaningful and manageable for many.

Pulling Away From Distractions
A caveat to our fasting is to minimize distractions and to step away from anything that dulls our spiritual sensitivity. When we eliminate distractions,we break the grip of noise, hurry, and constant stimulation so our hearts can hear the Holy Spirit more clearly.

This may include reducing television, streaming, social media, entertainment, constant news, and unnecessary screen time. Pulling away from distraction creates sacred space for God to speak, guide, correct, comfort, and strengthen us, especially when paired with solitude, slowing down enough to sit with God.

Extended Time With God
Deepen your fast by setting aside intentional daily time in silence, solitude, and stillness. Read Scripture slowly. Sit quietly. Listen for the Spirit’s whisper. Let God minister to the deep places of your soul.

Purpose of Fasting During These 40 Days

Fasting creates space for God to shape our desires, soften our hearts, strengthen our faith, expose what needs healing, lead us into obedience, renew our joy, bring clarity and breakthrough, and cultivate repentance and reconciliation. This is a season to put the past to rest and walk in the freedom Christ has given us.

How to Meditate on Scripture During These 40 Days

Biblical meditation is not emptying your mind; it is filling your mind with the Word of God and allowing it to settle deeply into your heart.

• Emphasize different words each time
