Proverbs 18:10: The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs to it and is safe and set on high [far above evil].
One evening a little four year old was lying in bed almost asleep when all of a sudden there was a big clap of thunder that seemed to shake the entire house. A thunderstorm had rolled in during the night bringing driving rain, high winds, thunder and lightning.
The child woke up frightened and looked all around the room to see what was going on. Then she saw her parents at the door to her room. They heard the thunder and had already come to her room to check on her. Immediately upon seeing them the little girl jumped out of bed and ran to her daddy’s arms, in tears, frightened by the storm.
The father lifted her up and held her tight, while her mother kissed and comforted her.
Many of the storms of life seem to come upon us suddenly. Some are so severe that they seem to shake us to the core: legal issues, discovering an unfaithful spouse, a bad health diagnosis, a major car wreck, a child in trouble, a sudden lay off from a job, the death of a loved one…and the list goes on.
But this Proverb teaches us that there is safety in the name of the Lord. The word “name” not only refers to “Lord” (Yehovah), but also by implication His honor, authority, and character. This is what we run to; to be wrapped up in His love.
His love for us was demonstrated when He sacrificed His Son, while we were dead (separated) in our sins…far from His holy nature. He made us alive in Christ (Ephesians 2:4-5). And if He loved us that much, He will not withhold anything from us (Romans 8:31-32) according to His devine will, especially in our time of need. He longs to be gracious towards us (Isaiah 30:18-19).
He may not drive away your storm, but just like the child above, you will find comfort, encouragement, peace and endurance in His arms until the storm passes.
