Proverbs 8:17: I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.
When my wife and I were dating, I used to invite her over to my house for dinner. I would spend hours preparing meals and desserts I knew she would like. I took my time to make sure everything I fixed was just right. While I was cooking, I would anxiously look out the window to see if she arrived early. Why? Because I was in love.
Because of my passion for my wife, we ended up getting married and have been together for 30 years.
God is looking for the same type of passion for Wisdom. The word “diligent” means to get up early for, to put forth constant effort towards, to pursue with perseverance.
If you want wisdom to be part of your life, you have to show that you want it; you have to get up early, pursue it, look for it, think about it throughout the day, and take steps to “marry” it.
Once the “honeymoon” is over, you have to get down to “normal life with Wisdom…meaning you have to obey and live according to its guidance.
In John 14 Jesus made it abundantly clear that loving Him was expressed through obedience:
● John 14:15: “If you love me, you will keep my commands”
● John 14:21: “The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I also will love him and will reveal myself to him.”
● John 14:23: Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”
● John 14: 24: “The one who doesn’t love me will not keep my words. The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.”
So are you truly in love with Jesus or are you in a casual dating relationship? Can He point to your attitude, thoughts and actions and say, “Now, that’s love.”? Did you get up in the morning with a desire to pursue His Wisdom, or did you let it “walk on by”?
Proverbs 8:10 – 11 makes it straightforward and simple: Wisdom is more valuable than silver, gold or any treasure you may desire.
What do you truly love?
